Event Description

Environment, cycling, wildlife, and apna rural India... all close to our hearts... and hence, a ride into the heart of it all...! :-)

Tour de Mumbai... the "Million Fireflies" weekend ride... to celebrate World Environment Day!

Saturday, 4th June: Start at 5.00am from Dadar station (Central Railway)... We load all our bicycles on to the Kasara local...

Travel by train for over an hour... have a college-style picnic trip on the train! :-)

Get off at Kasara station.. cycle around 80 kms to Purushwadi...

At Purushwadi, a total rural experience awaits you - asli (and simple) gaon ka khana (veg), rural activities, overnight stay in real neat tents.. all thanks to my friends Inir and Vijay from Grassroutes... plus of course, enjoy the spectacle of the Million Fireflies that will be making Purushwadi their home for 10 days..! :-)

Sunday, 5th June (World Environment Day): Cycle "Race" (with a twist!) around the Purushwadi area.. breakfast and lunch (gaon-style!)..

Post-lunch, relax maaro for a bit... and then, saddle up and cycle back to Kasara station for the same old college-type picnic train ride back to Dadar! :-)

Btw, if you want to get any (non-cycling) family members along, let me know... cos we'll have to arrange for a vehicle to transport them from Kasara to Purushwadi (and back)...

Feel free to call me on 9820-636364...

Looking forward to riding with you... :-)

Sorry but my parents are coming to town on the 3rd. I would have liked to join otherwise

Update 4: Backup vehicle

There will be a backup vehicle on both days. This vehicle will trail behind the cyclists, so that anyone who wants to take a break from cycling for any reason, just needs to get on the vehicle along with their bike and relax till they feel like getting out and cycling again! :-)

The backup vehicle constitutes a significant chunk of the cost. For estimation purposes, we've assumed that this would be defrayed across 20 cyclists, which is the number we expect would be coming for this ride.

Update 3: Trip Cost

Non-cyclists: Rs 2,500 per person [Grassroutes' normal charges (ex-Kasara) for a Weekend Program at Purushwadi; this includes Transport (by jeep, from Kasara to Purushwadi and back), Food (Evening Snacks, Dinner, Morning Breakfast, Lunch and Fruits), Stay (in comfy tents), Guided tour to the Fireflies Event and other activities]

Cyclists: Rs 3,300 per person [this includes (in addition to the Grassroutes Rural Experience package outlined above), Backup Vehicle to trail behind the cyclists for both trips on Saturday and Sunday + Packed Breakfast and Lunch (for Saturday) + Snacks (for Sunday) + Train Ticket (Dadar-Kasara and back) + Bicycle Luggage charges (about Rs 150 each way) + Packaged Drinking Water for 2 days + Enerzal/Glucon-C for the rides]

Update 2: Purushwadi (where we will be staying overnight on 4th June) is one of the villages that has been adopted by Grassroutes, which runs community-based rural tourism projects, aimed at poverty reduction and livelihood generation, by training villages in Maharashtra to host tourists... Grassroutes' goal is to help the urban world (that's us!) meet and discover rural India (like Purushwadi, which we'll be exploring, a week from now)... :-)

Update 1: There's some good climbing involved... Kasara Ghat (a winding 8-km road with a steady incline) at the start and a couple of smaller climbs towards the end (closer to Purushwadi)... we'll have a backup vehicle in case anyone needs a ride to the top... :-)

Quite interesting... L/B prices please and where is Purushwadi? Is it the one near Junnar/ Bhandardara Lake?
