Indian Cyclists Network

Hi, I have an ENDA make 16 inches folding bicycle with 6 Speed Shimano Rear Derailleur system gear and I have been using this cycle extensively for last one year.

Now, it appears that the headset  play has increased considerably . I dismantled the headset and found that 16 balls(5/32 inches ball dia) retainer type bearings have worn out and the upper one's retainer is broken.

Now, my question is whether I should go for plain ball bearings (25 balls or so) instead of retainer type bearings . I have seen the Sheldon DIY site and found that these retainer type bearings may be replaced with plain ball(5/32 in ball dia ) .

I contacted ENDA for clarification of bearings and the little play in headset . they replied that it is for safety of the rider and headset since the wheel dia is 16 inches only but there is no mention of bearings at all.

Would somebody can help me to take the decision of replacing the retainer types with plain balls !

Yes you can do that, this will not harm the performance in any which way. If you have a 1inch threaded headset then you can also go for this product - http://www.decathlon.in/cycling/spareparts/steering-components/stee...

Its a nice sealed 1 inch threaded headset.
