Hello, i am looking for a good entry level hybrid cycle to start cycling. Which would include rides around thane city. And sometimes up till belapur (60km). I currently have a simple hero DTB octane cycle.

I have alwes been intrested in cycling, but never had enough resources to put in a good cycle.

Now i have applied for YHAI's jalori pass cycling expedition and am riding alot more than usual.

I have noticed that i get tired alot faster due to my cycles center suspention.

I have approched local cyclists through facebook. They have varying opinions some say dont go for firefox and montra as indian brands are not as good as trek Scott and other international brands.
Some say go for as much as you can spend.

What i would like to know is whether firefox and montra really not worth buying?

Model i have in mind is firefox rapid 21s which is for 17k
Comparable model for same in trek would be 7.1 fx For 25k.
What will be gaining by spending 25k over firefox? As on paper they both look same.

Is there any other hybrid under 25k i can go for?
What is the avrage life span of a cycle in this category?

Couple of months back I was also in same situation. You can read my discussion on below link:

Long story short: I bought merida crossway in 25k but that was last year model so I got discount on that. you can still get the 2015 model in 27-28k.

Other options:

Schwinn sporterra sport: It does not have any suspension but it is super light and you can get it in 20k. Perfect bike if you don't need suspension.

Schwinn searcher: This one is with suspension. you can get it in 25k.

Btwin riverside: You can have a test ride in any Decathlon store and you can get it in 20-25k range.

Scott: It will cost you around 30-32k. The only thing I don't like about this cycle is its ugly seat.

Trek: the brand is good but I don't have any experience on any of its hybrid.

Don't go for firefox, schnell etc. They may feel same during test ride but the ride quality may deteriorate in the long run. I had test ride of rapide 21s but I felt it heavy. Still if your budget is limited, prefer montra over firefox.

It's components, which are secondary to getting a good frame, as in, a bike with a good frame (irrespective of components) is going to give a smoother ride as compared to a bike with higher/more expensive components and a cheaper frame.
Example:-
My own Btwin MyBike that costs ~5k gives a much better/smoother ride as compared to any of Hero/Hercules/Atlas/Avon's fancy full suspension bikes that cost 3x more than my bike.
Same thing is applied for FF (Firefox) and Trek.

Well, if you stick to the roads, then they will do fine enough for 2 years, and that too, foreign companies give a decent warranty period of 5 years on frame. But, if after 2 years something happens in the frame, it would be evident that the user maybe using the bike irresponsibly.

check out btwin riverside 3, its a good bike.

The Decathlon online store only shows Btwin Riverside 3 for men. Is there a difference between that and the Btwin Riverside 3 'Trekking Bike'? I can see that the price you have mentioned here (22K INR) is quite less than that mentioned for the bike in the Decathlon online store (around 34K INR).

From your posts in other threads, I found out that even you own a Riverside 3. Could you please tell, which one do you own? I am presently in a dilemma to buy a hybrid myself. Having a budget of 20K INR, I have been researching a lot about bicycles in this range.

Although, understanding from some helpful post from experienced people like yourself, Aaron and others, I follow that only researching in the internet won't help as I should also go to the store and check the bike(s) to suit my comfort; I am still one month shy to be able to go to a Decathlon store myself. However, during this one month, I want to be able to make up my mind to choose at least 2 bikes in my budget range.

I am 5'11" tall & weigh 87 kg. I wish to use the bike for commuting. The average daily usage per day will be 30-40 km, and during weekends 60-70  km.

Could you give me some suggestions? 

- Along with Riverside 3 (a.k.a Riverside 500) there is Schwinn Sporterra Sport which has a rigid fork, which makes it more efficient than the Riverside.
- Although the word "Trekking" is given along with the Riverside, I don't think I would suggest it for actual trekking (unless if you have good amount of experience with trail riding and mountain-biking). No, the model is the same.
- The difference in online price and the price of the bike if you directly buy it from Decathlon is so, because, the online price is what you would actually pay a local bicycle shop if you bought it from there. But, if you buy the bike directly from Decathlon, you avoid the Dealer, you would just pay Decathlon.
- I would suggest trying bikes of sizes 53 to 56cm, along with a basic BIKE FIT.

Thanks so much for taking time to reply in such a detailed manner.
Now that you've mentioned it, I wish to ask you- how is a rigid fork better than a suspension fork for common uses such as commuting on roads.
I have to admit that I am a bit uneducated about the names of the fork components, but anyway, a front tepescopic suspension fork contains fork tubes (one goes into the other) and springs and dampeners. See, so many parts as compared to a rigid fork, all that is just going to increase weight, and increase in weight converts into less efficiency.
Another thing, although you might not notice, but even the fork keeps on bobbing up and down (it's very less) but even that small amount is also energy wasted, and that small amount of energy wasted is going to be quite noticeable after 50kms of riding. Higher end forks supply a thing known as a lock-out system, means that you can completely stop the sus. from working.
And for the road, front sus. isn't really needed, just avoid some potholes and try and use your arms(& legs) as suspension when needed.

There seems to be a significant difference between the Decathlon online price (34k) and the one mentioned above by Mr. Basab (22k). Is it so that i am get a bike with original price of 34k, at 22k (just citing an example) ?

Also, what is a BIKE FIT? I'm sorry, I'm significantly illiterate with jargons..

Okay, let's take this bike itself as an example.
1. Decathlon instructs manufacturers to make bike, bit since they make it in such a large quantity, that it costs Decathlon only, say, 15k for each bike.
2. Now for Decathlon to make a profit, they sell the bike to a distributor for 19-22k (depending on quantity).
3. Now for the Distributor to make a profit, he might sell it at 25-26k, to a wholesaler (depending on quantity).
4. Now for the wholesaler to make a profit, he might sell the bike to the retailer (local bicycle shop) for say 29-30k.
5. Now for the bike shop to make a profit, the bike is going to be sold at MRP of 34k, although they may also sell it at 32k.
Now, if you see above, you would be skipping steps 3 to 5, you would be buying the same thing directly from Decathlon itself.
Now, when it comes to choosing a bike for oneself, the following steps need to be followed (it's waaay to brief).
1. Have budget.
2. Select type of bike (and components)
3. Choose bike model.
4. Choose right bike size
5. Get bike fit (an test ride).
- Choosing the right bike size is critical because with increase in seat-tube length, the distance between the seat tube and head tube (and hence handle bar) also increases. Eg.- The 19" model of MyBike, the distant between the seat tube and head tube is around 20". Now in the 21" model, the distance is 22", meaning the handle bar is going to be much more far as compared to the 19" model.
- Bike fitting unlike bike sizing is a much more narrower term, say, a person similar in height to you, may have the same bike size, but his bike fit is going to be very different to yours (this is because not every person is the same). A bike fit is done in order to allow the rider to effectively and efficiently use all his leg muscles (and pelvic too).
How to do a do a basic bike fit? Please go to youtube and search.

Coming back to my main question, so as of now my options with the bike are:
1- Riverside 3/500
2- Schwinn Sportera

Are these the best options at my price range? And if you don't mind, could you also tell me the prices of the two (and also other probable options with equally better prospects) at which I can find them in decathlon store? The prices online are delusional. I have found differences in the online store, and those given here in the threads, by you, Mr. Basab or others..
