Sunday, October 10, 2010: Aarey - Nat'l Park Visit 2

After the recce David and I did earlier this week, the stage was set for the rest of the gang to experience first hand, what David and I experienced. We'd built up the anticipation, the excitement, the "can't bear to wait anymore" energy through the week, the only question was.... would it turn out to be a case of belied expectations? From the reactions from the gang today, I guess I pleased my public! … Continue

Cycling, a passion:- Top class cycles and cyclists in Mumbai.

The "Delhi Commonwealth games -2010 " has definitely created a sports craze amongst our youth. I normally regularly cycle from Prabhadevi to Mahalaxmi race-course at approx 0600 hrs, exercise in the race-course garden and return back home via "worli sea-face" route". As usual ,would see a few cyclists once having met and conversed with veteran senior citizen cyclist Mr Filly .Fitter who redefined the meaning of "Age" in my dictionary, a fanastic cyclist at 60+ age group. On Thursday… Continue

Cycling Tips for Newbies.

This morning I was riding with a young girl, a mother of a 6 year old. She decided to take up cycling after a 15 year gap. Two weeks ago, I rode with a friend, who has two grown up kids and took to cycling after eons, and has been at it for about 3-4 months. What was lacking was the confidence to do a slightly longer distance. And the first ride was great, the rider came through with flying colors. Truly commendable.

Of late I've run into several people…

20 10 24: Ride to Gateway of India, with a Difference!

Over the last few weekends, The Serious Riders have done some great rides, all outside the city. This time around we decided to do a city ride, albeit with a difference. A fast paced ride from Bandra to Gateway of India, and on the return to Matunga for some "tiffin" at Cafe Madras, before we all went out separate ways.

So for me the dilemma was, do I restrict attendance to the core team that rides each Sunday, or do I open it up to the public domain, or at least within the Cyclist. In… Continue

Commuter Cyclists Cycles welcomed in Posh Mumbai parking lots.

Had visited the "India Bulls Centre Tower' at Elphinstone road on thursday(21-10-2010) for official work. As the building was cycling distance from my residence at Prabhadevi decided to cycle the distance, prepared for insults or sarcastic looks from the watchmen. To my relief and delight, the watchmen guided me to the cycle/ motorcycle parking lots after the normal security checks. The "India Bulls skyscraper" was akin to the best buildings/office complexes i have seen on overseas tours .The… Continue

Help in getting cycle reviews

Hello,

I am new to this network and would like to have some help in selecting a Bike.

I was wondering if there could be a review on Bikes for sub 10k, sub 20k and so on, keeping in mind the new users and old ones. I don't even know the brands available to make any choice.

I am cycling to work for past 9 months and currently own a very economical bicycle, which i had bought to check if I am serious about this or is it just a passing fad.

As…

Cycling for a cause

I am following this network for 2 weeks and find it very good and informative.

But I also feel that this network is focussed more on people who are very much devoted to Cycling as a passion and hobby.

I am somebody who wants to contribute being green and has taken cycling for that purpose and am surprised to find very few efforts to spread this amongst others on your network.

Cycling events for 10 to 200 kms are great but they don't cut ice with many people who are…

Need help in picking a new bike!!!

Hi Guys,

I am a keen cyclist (not mountain or off-road biking but simple road driving). I used to cycle 40 kms a day a couple of years back but now am totally out of practise. I had Hero Hawk (racing cycle with drop handles)

I am now looking to pick up cycling again (and may be drive to office too). But this time I am looking for a better cycle, with gears, good brakes, alloy frame, etc. I am not looking to cycle the fastest but yes, for longer…

The Effect of Pollution on Bikers. Let's not be ignorant.

Now I've been biking regularly for the past few years in different international locations, including Chicago, London and now Bombay. Whilst I've read all about the effect of pollution on bikers, never have I experienced it more first hand than in Bombay. On a daily basis I ride in Bandra and a few days a week into town. The Bandra rides are usually between 5.30/6 PM until about 8 pm, and the rides to town are usually early mornings finishing by about 9 - 10 am. Weekends almost always I ride… Continue

Dirt, Filth and what its doing to India.

It was after many, many years that I visited Aarey on my bike ride yesterday, and I must say that I was completely shocked at how the facilities, etc have deteriorated to such an extent that I begin to feel ashamed as an Indian. I've lived and worked in four continents, but if you cut me I bleed Indian, and am proud to be that way. But looking all around me, there is less and less to remain proud of. CWG, et all.

Now the last time I visited Aarey, was with my son Krishanu, who's now… Continue

Sunday: Oct 17, 2010- Bandra - Katmandu via Yeoor Hills - Bandra. Forced march.

Pics in My Photos Section.

Another Sunday morning, yet another long distance endurance ride. What is it with these guys? I can't say what I like more, the never say die attitude, or the perfect camaraderie, and team spirit. I would say all three. So James posted a ride and we were off yet again. I suggested an earlier start, to avoid the heat at the end of the ride, but only ended up delaying everybody. Embarrassed. This time around we had two… Continue

Technical Jargon a la Cycling...

When I started to ride seriously four years ago in Chicago, I kinda just went to the store called Sports Authority and picked up two bikes. One for myself and one for anybody who may want to ride with me on weekends, etc. I looked at a few bikes and tried them out, and with the help of a very competant (and pretty) sales girl, I picked out the bikes that I was finally set to buy. I bought two identical bikes so I would always have a spare, and it would look and feel the same. The only… Continue

Replaced the front fork on my MTB

Blogging this just so that it may perhaps be useful for others.

The Firefox Viper was my return to cycling bike when I bought it in June 2007. Back then, I didn't have the luxury of choice as we have now, and this seemed to be the best bike

to buy. It's got a good frame, but I realized early on that the front

fork was pretty bad. The Bike is heavy, and the fork made things

worse. The double crown was clunky, and within a year, the…

Biking Ettiquete - Easy to forget but important to bear at mind.

There are very few sports where enthusiasts are a really close knit community. Diving and Sky Diving come to mind. Cycling is another one, of course I mean recreational or adventure biking! I think it has something to do with the fact that even though there is some degree of competitiveness, that's not the main driver. I would prefer to call them "inclusive" sports.… Continue
