I'm called the Marquis de Chandivali. The office is in Chandivali and its not pretty. Cost cutting mandated by the VC's that fund us, and so we moved from the prestigious Prism at Mindspace, Malad to a run down old building at Chandivali. Therefore the name.
Anyways now that I have my title.....
Getting to Chandivali from Bandra by road, especially by a ric, the poor man's set of wheels, isn't pretty, what… Continue

Diwali Holidays Get EXTENDED.....
Its the Diwali Holidays see, and take advantage of things going well at work, and a bit of a lull to take an additional couple of days off. Well it started off with a Friday off, then extended to Friday and Monday, and then became the whole week off thing.
Had no clue what I was going to actually do, but get in some Cycling was always a the back of my mind. Am not in peak condition, so even though the intent was to do some… Continue

December 2, 2010 is when I went back to work after a break of almost of a year. As I've mentioned elsewhere in my blogs, it was a wonderful time with kids, etc, etc.... So apart from time spent at home, a few short consulting assignments (to keep the cash flows going), reading and the like I didn't do much. What I did do and quite religiously at that, was hop on to my bike and ride every day, and on weekends ride and ride and ride.
Now having worked from a very early age, I did know… Continue

In some of the previous blogs I wrote about the basics, how to build stamina, diet, and the like.
So now that you probably have a bike, you've started riding, and the bug has bitten you. What next? Since most of us are from the city, we've been riding in the city, perhaps around our locality and a little bit beyond. It's getting boring to go around and around the same circuit, be it Carter Road and Bandstand in Bandra, or be it Five Gardens in Matunga, or be it Shivaji Park. If we… Continue

After taking a break of a few days from doing tough rides, the team is at it again.
James posted this ride to Matheran, promising a tough one, and boy oh boy was that a well kept promise! The ride from Panvel to Matheran is about 50 km, and the last 7 km, is the really tough uphill stretch. The plan was to take the bikes to Panvel by… Continue

Change in Plan
This ride is not for the faint hearted. Originally we were supposed to do the Uttan Hills ride, and the event had already been posted. Then James writes to a couple of us, I think it was Amitabh and me, saying that they'd met the Conservation Officer, Mr. Munde at Borivali National Park, or Sanjay Gandhi National Park… Continue

After the recce David and I did earlier this week, the stage was set for the rest of the gang to experience first hand, what David and I experienced. We'd built up the anticipation, the excitement, the "can't bear to wait anymore" energy through the week, the only question was.... would it turn out to be a case of belied expectations? From the reactions from the gang today, I guess I pleased my public! … Continue

This morning I was riding with a young girl, a mother of a 6 year old. She decided to take up cycling after a 15 year gap. Two weeks ago, I rode with a friend, who has two grown up kids and took to cycling after eons, and has been at it for about 3-4 months. What was lacking was the confidence to do a slightly longer distance. And the first ride was great, the rider came through with flying colors. Truly commendable.
Of late I've run into several people… Continue

Over the last few weekends, The Serious Riders have done some great rides, all outside the city. This time around we decided to do a city ride, albeit with a difference. A fast paced ride from Bandra to Gateway of India, and on the return to Matunga for some "tiffin" at Cafe Madras, before we all went out separate ways.
So for me the dilemma was, do I restrict attendance to the core team that rides each Sunday, or do I open it up to the public domain, or at least within the Cyclist. In… Continue

Now I've been biking regularly for the past few years in different international locations, including Chicago, London and now Bombay. Whilst I've read all about the effect of pollution on bikers, never have I experienced it more first hand than in Bombay. On a daily basis I ride in Bandra and a few days a week into town. The Bandra rides are usually between 5.30/6 PM until about 8 pm, and the rides to town are usually early mornings finishing by about 9 - 10 am. Weekends almost always I ride… Continue

It was after many, many years that I visited Aarey on my bike ride yesterday, and I must say that I was completely shocked at how the facilities, etc have deteriorated to such an extent that I begin to feel ashamed as an Indian. I've lived and worked in four continents, but if you cut me I bleed Indian, and am proud to be that way. But looking all around me, there is less and less to remain proud of. CWG, et all.
Now the last time I visited Aarey, was with my son Krishanu, who's now… Continue

Another Sunday morning, yet another long distance endurance ride. What is it with these guys? I can't say what I like more, the never say die attitude, or the perfect camaraderie, and team spirit. I would say all three. So James posted a ride and we were off yet again. I suggested an earlier start, to avoid the heat at the end of the ride, but only ended up delaying everybody. Embarrassed. This time around we had two… Continue

When I started to ride seriously four years ago in Chicago, I kinda just went to the store called Sports Authority and picked up two bikes. One for myself and one for anybody who may want to ride with me on weekends, etc. I looked at a few bikes and tried them out, and with the help of a very competant (and pretty) sales girl, I picked out the bikes that I was finally set to buy. I bought two identical bikes so I would always have a spare, and it would look and feel the same. The only… Continue

There are very few sports where enthusiasts are a really close knit community.
Diving and Sky Diving come to mind. Cycling is another one
, of course I mean recreational or adventure biking! I think it has something to do with the fact that even though there is some degree of competitiveness, that's not the main driver. I would prefer to call them "inclusive" sports.… Continue

The last time I rode with Swapnil Shah, I was impressed. We were riding from Bandra - Gateway - Bandra a couple of Sunday's ago, and he got in touch with me out of the blue and we were happy that he joined us. What impressed me? That he rode all the way from Kandivili to Bandra, and then with the pack to Gateway, Matunga, back to Bandra with us, and then at in the blazing sun of 1 pm, he rode all he way back to Kandivili!
He'd mentioned a group doing the Uttan Hills rides and… Continue

I'd been itching to get off the beaten path, and do something different from my daily routine, which had settled into a Bandra - Gateway - Bandra, or alternatively a Bandra centric ride: Pali Road - Carter Road - Pali Hill - Bandstand - Mount Marys. Finally today, Bharath and I decided to head out and do something different. I rode from Hill Road Bandra to Bharat who is a Professor of Mathematics from California, teaching at IIT Powai for a few months. From IIT Powai we were to take the Pipe… Continue
