If you step out of home early in the morning, you will witness a large number of cycling enthusiasts 
pedalling on the streets alongside morning strollers.
The city has seen an average 20 per cent annual rise in bicycle sales in the last few years as more and more citizens are taking to cycling to remain fit.

One of the main reasons for the boom in the sales is the increased level of awareness about fitness among Punekars. 

“People are now associating cycling with fitness. As the awareness is increasing, so are the sales according to owner of city-based  Cycling Company. 
Cycling has become popular in the last few years. 
Gym has now become monotonous for people.
 People believe that with cycles, they can take new routes daily, thus keeping the excitement alive.

He added that owning a good bicycle has also become a status symbol. 

Not only adults, but even children are getting bicycles in this range.
People who have been cycling for many years tend to purchase bicycles that cost Rs 1 lakh or more. 

Constant various events and outreach programmes to spread awareness about cycling and its benefits have been organised in the city over the couple of years.

Compared to Pune, you'll find many people in Chennai on bicycles from all walks of life and age groups of both genders. In fact, percent of women (for occupation) pedaling in Chennai might be higher in comparison to any other metro cities in India.
