Cycle tracks unused due to lack of proper connectivity

Once, Pune was known as a city of cycles.
Even today many citizens wish to ride cycles, but due to lack of safety for cyclists people do not dare to allow their dear ones to use cycles for daily commute.

Union Urban Minister Venkaiah Naidu was in the city on Saturday to launch the Smart City projects along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking on the occasion, Naidu stressed on restoring the culture of cycling in all major cities.
He said that as the lifestyle has changed, it is the need of hour that citizens use cycles daily.
It will help citizens be healthy and also solve the traffic problem.

The cycle tracks are not properly connected, viz, they are not set up end-to-end.
Another reason why cyclists do not use cycle tracks is the presence of encroachments on the cycle tracks. At some places, the PMC itself has set up some road furniture on cycle tracks.
At other places, cycle tracks are encroached on by hawkers.

The cycle tracks were built just because there was a condition in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme to have cycle tracks along the main roads.
The PMC built the cycle tracks only to fulfil the condition.

Now as the Union government has again instructed PMC to promote cycles in urban areas, the civic body has come up with plans for improving cycle tracks and promoting cycles.

Not just Pune but almost every small or big Indian city was once known as 'City of Cycles' or 'City of Cyclists' in absence of motorized personal vehicles.
