The "Mahatma Gandhi Olympic Swimming Pool" at Shivaji Park in Mumbai has re-opened since Monday(11-10-2011) after a two and a half year closure due to re-construction and re-designing .
The present pool is an advertisement in swimming pool excellence equivalent to "First World Country" status in aesthetics as well as design. The main pool is the normal "Olympic Size 50 metres length" having 10 swimming lanes.
There are 2 smaller pools of 20 meters length each and a third shallow wading pool for kids. Normally we motorists always cursed the Mumbai Municipality for the bad maintenance of roads, especially during the monsoon season. Re-construction of the "Mahatma Gandhi Swimming Pool" by the "Mumbai Municipal corporation" is definitely a great achievement as it had manny detractors when the project was first initiated in early 2009, including yours truely. The reasons were valid as most government public projects take years to attain completion, besides, we were afraid that the "Membership Charges" would rise steeply after renovation and re-construction of the old swimming pool.
The "Mumbai Municipal Corporation" has proved the skeptics wrong by constructing a World Class swimming pool for the "Common Man" at a nominal annual membership charge.
I advice fellow cyclists to become members of this club if not members of any other swimming club in Mumbai. Cyclists can have the added pleasure of a nice swim after a strenuos cycle ride to the pool.
This was my format from 1999 upto 2009 before the closure of the pool and now again the same format after re-opening.According to my personal experience, a combination of swimming and cycling is the best natural form of physical fitness.
