A magical enchanting ride - The tour of Kangra ... It's not a race against time and your stamina and your resolve ... It's a fun ride with lots of camaraderie, enjoying the mountains and the scenic vistas at your pace ... remote destinations, migratory birds, the pong dam reservoir, meadows at Bir, Rice and paddy fields, small brooks and streams, ancient temples, small villages, THE mighty Dhauladhar range snow capped and Home to his holiness the Dalai Lama .... The tour of Kangra - Be there !!!
The beautiful valley of Kangra is a gentle, often magical showcase for nature’s splendor. Verdant green slopes vie for attention with snow-capped peaks, evident conifers are thrown into relief by terraced slopes of corn or tea. Trees, heavy with fruit stand in a hundred orchards. In restless brooks, gamboling trout catch the sunlight. And everything is painted with a vivid floral palette. To the north the imposing dhauladhar range flanks the valley and Dharamshala clings to its side. Through part of the valley runs a quint train on the Pathankot – Jogindernagar line which is quite a draw for visitors. The Kangra valley is a home for a nomadic, pastoral community – The Gaddis. This hardy and colorful lot is believed to have crossed the formidable Dhauladhars, centuries ago, in quest of greener pastures for their flocks of sheep. Today, they live in a lower valley, while the men folk foray into the higher meadows in the summer months. Winter in the Kangra valley is enchanting. The snow line is close enough at all times (from dharamshala it’s a short hike) and during these months, the northern part is saddled in a blanket of freshly fallen snow. And the magic of Kangra takes on yet another hue.
Lots of single track riding, smooth roads and double track off roads make the Tour of Kangra special. We start the ride on the 27th January 2012 and wind it off on the 29th January 2012, after trailing for 250 kilometers through the length and breadth of The Kangra valley in Himachal Pradesh, one of the best winter destinations in India. We arrive in Dharamshala on the 26th of January, 2012 and catch a glimpse of the Tibetan way of life, Mc Leodganj being home to His Holiness ‘The Dalai Lama’. This is followed by a brief orientation about the ride and moments filled with camaraderie as we raise toasts for having arrived for the Tour of Kangra.
